Buying a Used Vehicle

 

Are you thinking of buying a secondhand vehicle?  Buying a used vehicle can be a risky business.  The questions below are deigned to help you make a safe choice.  Consider the list of questions below.  If your responses indicate reason for suspicion, then be certain you do not purchase the vehicle prior to having an officer or DMV representative complete an official VIN inspection and verification.  Note:  The VIN is the Vehicle Identification Number.

  1. Does the advertisement or seller advise you to call at specific times?
  2. Is the contact number to a cellular telephone?
  3. Does the seller insist on bringing the vehicle to you for viewing?
  4. Can the seller produce a DMV title document?
  5. Do the title and registration documents accurately describe the make, model, year, engine number and color of the vehicle?
  6. Does the seller seem reluctant to have the police do a VIN inspection prior to the sale?
  7. Does the same key fit all locks?
  8. Is there a clearly readable stamped VIN plate, usually found on the driver’s side of the dashboard, and visible through the windshield?
  9. Is the VIN the same on the VIN plate as that on the registration and title documents?
  10. Will the seller accept a check, even on condition that they hold the vehicle until the check clears?
