South Lake Tahoe is located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The city is situated along the shore of Lake Tahoe, one of the world's most beautiful lakes. The area offers winter skiing, camping, hiking, and a nearly endless list of outdoor recreational activities amid spectacular views. Our permanent population, of approximately 24,000, routinely swells to over 75,000 during summer months and the ski season. Major holidays can bring in excess of 150,000 people to our small community. South Lake Tahoe is sustained primarily by a tourist based, service-driven, economy.
We field a number of special teams and assignments available to officers including Detectives, SWAT, Canine, a Narcotics Task Force, Bicycle Patrol, Field Training Officer, Reserve Training Officer, School Resource Officer, Crisis Negotiation Team, and others.
The Operations (aka: Patrol) Division offers a ride-along program to qualified persons interested in discovering more about how our agency operates. Appointments are generally made through the on-duty watch commander for this purpose. Call (530) 542-6123 for more information.
