Marine Unit

Our Marine Unit consists of two vessels staffed by four Annuitant Reserve Police Officers.  These are officers who have retired from long tenured law enforcement careers.  Although our full time peace officers are not collaterally assigned to work this detail regularly, they are permitted to be on the boats with our Marine Officers upon request.  Officers may also be assigned to supplement staffing on one of our vessels during special events such as the Independence Day celebration in our city.

The waters of Lake Tahoe are divided by the state line separating California and Nevada. The lake is patrolled by at least five law enforcement agencies, including the US Coast Guard.  The City of South Lake Tahoe includes approximately five square miles of Lake Tahoe.  Our Marine Unit patrols this area to maintain a general enforcement and safety presence for our boating public.  Our law enforcement presence is not confined merely to the area of Lake Tahoe within the city limits, however.  Because of mutual aid agreements with other agencies patrolling Lake Tahoe, it is common for our boats to respond anywhere on Lake Tahoe where there is an emergency.

Typically this unit is active only during the summer months of the year; from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  Our officers work closely with allied agencies on Lake Tahoe, including the US Coast Guard, the Sheriff’s Departments of El Dorado and Placer Counties of California and Douglas and Washoe Counties of Nevada.
