Explorer Program
Police Explorers - The South Lake Tahoe Police Explorer Program exists for youths between the ages of 14 and 21 looking to explore the law enforcement field as a career opportunity. It offers the youth a chance to get first hand experience in seeing what a Police Officer really does on a day to day basis. It gives youth an opportunity to create positive relationships with Police Officers.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Explorer program is a branch of the Boy Scouts of America under the “Learning for Life” category. The program operates on money the members raise themselves at fundraisers. The program is supervised by two sworn Law Enforcement Officers, one Sergeant and a Lieutenant.
The Explorers receive training in many different aspects of law enforcement such as building searches, traffic stops, traffic accident investigation, domestic violence, crime scene investigation and many others. Explorers have the opportunity to take part in a ride-a-long program where the Explorer will ride along with an Officer while on patrol.
Explorers provide service to both their Community and the Police Department through community service projects such as traffic control during holidays and special events, fingerprinting small children, drug education in the schools, safety training programs for small children, funeral details, security at community functions and honor guard details.
Explorers must meet the following criteria:
• Can be male or female 14 to 21 years of age
• Maintain a 2.0 GPA or “C” or better average in school
• Have no negative contacts with law enforcement
• Be willing to commit to the program
• Conform to the grooming standards of the Police Department
• Receive parental approval
• Good moral character
• Complete an application
• Pass a background check
• Pass an interview process
• Attend 70% of all meetings and details
