K9 Division
Team supervised by Sergeant J. Adler (530) 542-6123 jadler@cityofslt.us
K9 (or K-9) refers to a variety of definitions, mostly related to dogs. The term originated in the military, where designations such as G-2 are common, making K-9 a rare official pun, being closely similar to "canine". The term, originally referencing war dogs, has since carried over to police and law enforcement, and sentry and assistance dogs as well.
The South Lake Tahoe K9 Division is assigned to work patrol and it’s primary functions include:
• Search/Tracking for suspects
• Building Searches
• Assist in Search for missing / injured elderly, children, and adults
• Narcotics Search
• Suspect Apprehension
The K9 Team consists of 2 handlers and dogs:

Both teams participate in many community events such as Air fest, The Drug Store Project, along with visits to schools, and senior citizens events.
The K9 unit hosts a yearly K9 competition consisting of several K9 teams from law enforcement agencies throughout California and Nevada The K9 unit maintains current state certification and trains bi-monthly to ensure the dog is ready for service.
